The “New Style” is an interrelated system, a “universe in music” in the form of symbolic musical objects and languages, the product of my 2007-2012 period, and now planned to be my lifetime work. This page contains papers on NS as well as its foundations in my theory work, and visual sketches to supplement the writing.
For a list of NS/I.O.theory in short definitions, see the glossary.

PAPERS, NOTES - New Style, foundational pre-NS Ideas Original work SKETCHES
A subset of my writings, concentrating on the New Style and its dimensions, supported by important Ideas Original documents that serve as the foundation of NS - several expositions of pre-NS styles, I.O. theories, 'practical' documents on aspects of composition, and notes on influential works and artists.

Shorthand visual representations of the dimensions and foundations of the New Style - not intended to be comprehensive, but more to foreshadow further development - the spirit of the NS structure as it currently stands, the Ideas Original body of theory it is built on, suggestions for inner structures and behavior of the music (axiom), and some preliminary ideas for reifications, from the 2010 'H700' sketch collection.

The New Style - Overview
The overview of the New Style - summary, objects, the system and advanced concepts.

New Style Prompts
NS is a prompt-based system - this is a basic list of prompts for each level: reification and Pre-NS,
post-reification (NS Proper), holistic issues, and the NS inversion.

The New Style and Reification - Beyond Programmaticism
The reification aspect of the New Style - summary, reification strategy overview (music and subject side) and its roots in programmaticism.

The New Style - Theoretical Possibilities
A preliminary inventory of NS's possibilities in its purely described/'theoretical' form.

The New Style and Variation
Variation form, developing variation, combinatorics - variation principles inform NS to its core.
This document traces the origins, its implications in the New Style, lists variation tasks at several levels, outlines a variation process, and explores benchmarks including Beethoven's 'Diabelli'.

The New Style and Philosophy
How the New Style manifests, interacts with and represents philosophy - both comprehensive and personal. This document traces NS's origins in philosophy and its evolution into reification, comprehensive philo, and original 'pet' philosophy (with summaries of major concepts).

The New Style and the Listener
How NS interacts with the listener, specific issues, and recommendations for approaching it.

Problems of The New Style - Open List of Criticisms
Anticipated criticisms, written by the composer.A mix of solved and unsolved issues in NS.
See: "100 Problems of Music"

General Form (+ List)
An exploration of the 'idea forms' a reification can take - hardly comprehensive, but offers 600+ extramusical (and some musical) form analogies.

Ideas Original as Approach (Toward Generalized I.O.)
Very important summary of Ideas Original and its concepts/documents - the approaches of each from a generalized perspective - asking: "how can Ideas Original be used to tackle any discipline?"

Intellectual Counterpoint - Organic Domain Grammar and Total Connectivity
Explores counterpoint with semantic meaning, with examples of possibilities and implementations.
Total Connectivity is a closely related supplementary body of theory, from earlier I.O.

Music as Language - Objectives and Parameters
Explores language design, fundamental to NS, personal styles like Nature and Mature, and music history in general. A representative list of musical parameters. Includes "aspects every language should have (or deliberately reject)".

The 'Nature Style'
Early 2010 theory that directly preceded the New Style - its goal to represent traits of nature, features of the universe, and forces/phenomena, and to approach 'sublimity'. Includes the progression of notes from 2010, and the 'radicality spectrum'.

An articulation of genius and its principles: an essential document in I.O. and NS - the main and most complete motivation for development 2009-present. Includes properties, gateway theory, functional tasks, and a preliminary process.

The "100 Problems of Music"
A document representing the aesthetic and practical problems of art, music and composing. This eventually led to theoretical music in late 2010. All NS reifications, and music in general, answer to this, explicitly or implicitly. A "perpetual challenge".

Joyce - Notes
James Joyce was and is a key impetus in the development of the mature style and New Style. The notes include reactions to Ulysses, explorations of 'periphery' and 'predeterminism', and some implications of his approach in music.

The 'Mature Style'
The pre-NS, open-ended, 'investigatory', 'Joycean' style. Traces roots from 'the late style' conception to its manifestations in the New Style.

The Idea Web
Exploration of the idea web concept, developed in the POTU(G) in fall 2010. It remains one of the highest ideals in the New Style, guiding combinatorics toward complexity in 'NS-Proper'. Includes a small matrix for 'harvesting' connections.

The concept and associated strategies for elevating material and works toward profundity and genius. Originally combined with Counterintuition, eventually the entire I.O. body of theory was mobilized toward its goal.

A list of creative strategies/prompts that go against “norms” defined in various ways (vs. audience, vs. culture, vs. genre, vs. situation, vs. task, vs. history) - from conceptual ideas to very practical musical ones. Originally combined with transfiguration.

Full Commitment
Exploration of full commitment as phenomenon (optimization toward radicalism of certain traits, often negative), works that use it, and a list of negative criticism that it can actualize.

Ambiguity Theory
"Beyond simple coherence", ambiguity theory explores strategies to create richness in music through counterintuition, "freeform orientation", momentary incoherence, mystery, higher musicality and more. This document explores the theory then suggests transformations by parameter.

A representative list of "how music can act", especially in distinctive, recognizable and unique ways. This is the initial articulation of "axiom" which later spawned many "axiomatic" lists.

Artist Reaction and the Evolution of Music
Combination of two music history investigations - the options an artist when reacting to his time, and an overview of common impulses/strategies used by composers through the historical progression of music.

Indirectness, Levels of Obviousness
An exploration of two related concepts, both dealing with the process of conceptualization when turning a subject into art. Manifested in NS's reification strategy, body of knowledge, the "deep generation" goal, and more.

Orchestration - Instruments, Ensembles, Table of the Elements Etc.
A compilation of ideas on orchestration. Includes the 2008 anthologic work, "ensemble design", transfiguration ensembles, introverted transfiguration, unique timbre, and table of the elements.

Salome - Notes
Notes on Richard Strauss's 1905 masterwork: a key benchmark, especially in rendered music - its complexity, agility, counterpoint and ambiguity led to the "fleeting" style, "leitmotivic classes", "complex object" and many other concepts.

Principles (2008)
An essential foundational document, created at the outset of 2007-2012, designed to guide the development of I.O. and N.S. with high ideals. While some of the content is now eligable for debate within the New Style, most of it is implicit in the theories created since.

The New Style (Reduction)
A reduction of the general structure of The New Style as it currently stands. It is in sketch/outline format, but should be visualized as a 3-dimensional system of interacting layers, building up from 'the Pre-NS Pool' and individual reifications to 'the combinatorial space of 'NS Proper' toward growing complexity, tone-editing, holistic considerations and the outer/'meta' domains of the NS inversion and total integration.
Ideas Original (July 2009)
A map of the concepts in Ideas Original as it stood in July 2009 (which correspond to documents). It remains an accurate representation of the basic categories of I.O. theory, though missing the more formal incarnations of some of the impulses: reification is called symbolism, the 'nature', ''mature' and NS/theoretical languages are absent, but implied. 2010 added more layers and terminology, and 2011 focused on the development of the New Style itself.
Axiom Examples
"Axiom" refers to "a recognizable way for music to act and/or its internal “texture”. I created a representative list in the "Axiom" paper at left. Axiom establishes a cornerstone of uniqueness and even genius is music - creating a new or pervasive “internal makeup” of music, at the micro-level. These are visual representations of some of the axioms I conceptualized in the 'H700'/early New Style period from 2010-2011.
Reification Examples
Reification "makes a concept concrete". These sketches are examples of the New Style's reification objects, which symbolize (and 'become') certain concepts or phenomena. Like the axiom sketches, these were mainly conceptualized during the 'H700'/early New Style period, therefore they emphasize the 'nature style' and the radicality spectrum's minimalism and sonorism. They don't fully utilize nor explicitly reference 2011's 'theoretical posssibilties' inventory, but will be 'fleshed out' with 'Intellectual Packages' and a full 'Bodies of Knowledge' to support each one (see glossary)
